Thou shalt not blatantly steal others words.

...if there's anybody watching.
What is stealing another's words, anyway? I just started a list specifically for the words I encounter here on wordie (either for the first time, or ones that I'd heard, but never bothered to find out what they meant.)
I hope that doesn't make me a badie wordie thiefie...

There is a fine moral distinction between borrowing a word and stealing a word. Obviously, we all like to share words with each other, and I often don't think to add a word until I see someone else with it. Of course, if you have never seen a word, and it is particularly good, you can add it, but you must do enough to make it your own. You have to read the definition, the etymology, leave a comment on that words page, make sure to use the word some time in the next few days.

So word theft is plagiarism? Are you saying that the first person to list a word is the "owner" of that word, and all subsequent listers are merely using it without permission?
Well, a little enforcement of such a rule might do wonders for, you know, that word.

colleen commented on the word wordie seventh commandment
I don't think there's any such thing as word theft, good lord. Let us not succumb to Wordie fascism, shall we?

I doubt seanahan was serious. I mean... if he was... as the official Wordie libertarian, I will have to put my foot down. ;-)

Thou shalt indicate facetiousness with helpful asterisks?

Wait a second... shalt? I don't think that's a real word. That's just silly.

It's old-timey.

I'm not completely serious. Anarchy is all well and good, but having some general guidelines is not necessary a bad thing. Obviously, the whole idea of shalt and commandments was a joke, which makes it seem much more serious. If you want to follow them, sure, if not, go nuts.

uselessness commented on the word wordie seventh commandment
Well sure, but haven't we been through this before? Guidelines are nice, but I ended up (quite remorselessly) breaking every last one of my rules. Now I almost regret writing them, except for the whole nostalgia factor. I'd prefer to keep Wordie totally free-form. :-)

I really think that the only rule Wordie needs is "don't be a jerk." The rest will sort itself. :)

I'm kinda new here, but I like the whole free form idea... Make your own rules for yourself, and try to avoid stepping on toes, or harshing mellows, or enjerkifying yourself. I think it's kind of interesting to see the guidelines & other Wordie chioces folks set up for themselves...
I thought nothing of scooping up whatever words made my boat float, from wherever I found 'em, including other folks lists, comments, names... Since reading that some might harbor a concept of theft round here, I have thought about it... ...& I'm still taking words that give me a tickle from wherever I find 'em, because... ...well, because the word speaks to me...
I've enjoyed reading the commandments/rules/guidelines and thinkin' about 'em, but that doesn't mean I intend to follow a single one of 'em... ...unless I want to (or am forced to, which don't look like it's ever going to happen), that is...
My too scents (enda quwater toog row on)

repsac3, I hope "enjerkifying" is on your list. It's a beauty. ;-)
I tend to agree with colleen. Don't be a jerk, first and foremost. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with making one's own rules, as long as you don't expect every other Wordie to adhere to them at all times.
Oh, and feel free to "steal" any of my words. Really. I stole them from the dictionary anyway.

palooka commented on the word wordie seventh commandment
"Stealing words" to me is a non-issue & is an issue that is often important to new Wordies. When someone adopts & uses one of my words I'm flattered! After all most of us are here to learn new words or variations of old ones & to share word discoveries we've made.
Copying another Wordie's entire list of course is reprehensible and idiotic.

colleen commented on the word wordie seventh commandment
Mm, what palooka said. We're here to share language, not to box it up, yes, yes -- but our lists as entities unto themselves are personal. This isn't to say someone else couldn't or shouldn't make their own list of, say, sailing words, or kinds of fish, but the copying of a list in its entirety would be rather like plagiarism.
Again I think it's all common sense and golden rule stuff!
